Umm Hakeem bint Usayd informed me, on the authority of her mother, that her husband had died while she was suffering from an ailment in her eyes, so she would apply jila kohl to them. Ahmad said, the correct wording is "kuhl al-jila." She sent a freedwoman of hers to Umm Salama to ask her about jila kohl.Umm Salama replied, "Do not apply it except out of necessity that becomes severe upon you. In that case, apply it at night and wipe it off during the day."Then Umm Salama said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to see me when Abu Salama had died, and I had placed aloes on my eyes.He asked, 'What is this, Umm Salama?'I replied, 'It is only aloes, Messenger of Allah. There is no perfume in it.'He said, 'It brightens the face, so do not apply it except at night, and remove it during the day. And do not comb your hair with perfume or with henna, for it is a dye.'I asked, 'With what shall I comb my hair, Messenger of Allah?'He answered, 'With lote-tree leaves. Cover your head with them.'"
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Nasai narrated it in the Book of Divorce, Chapter on the concession for a woman in mourning to comb her hair with lote-tree leaves, hadith 3567, from the hadith of Abdullah bin Wahb, with the same chain. Malik also narrated it in Muwatta, 2/600, hadith 1311, as a balagh, according to my verification.Mughira bin Dahhak is of unknown reliability, and Umm Hakeem bint Usayd, her condition is unknown (Taqrib).
