Marwan sent for Fatimah and questioned her, and she told him that she had been married to Abu Hafs. The Prophet ﷺ had appointed Ali bin Abu Talib over part of Yemen, and her husband went out with him. From there, her husband sent her the final pronouncement of divorce that remained for him, and he instructed Ayyash bin Abu Rabia and Harith bin Hisham to provide for her maintenance. The two of them said, "By Allah, she is not entitled to maintenance unless she is pregnant."So she went to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "You are not entitled to maintenance unless you are pregnant."She then asked his permission to move, and he granted it.She asked, "Where shall I move to, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "To the house of Ibn Umm Maktum."He was blind, so she could remove her outer garments in his presence without him seeing her. She remained there until her waiting period was complete, and then the Prophet ﷺ gave her in marriage to Usama.Qabisa returned to Marwan and informed him of all this.Marwan said, "We have only heard this hadith from a woman, so we will hold to the established practice we found the people upon."When this reached Fatimah, she said, "Between me and you is the Book of Allah. Allah Most High said, 'Divorce them at the start of their waiting period' [Talaq 65:1], up to 'you do not know, perhaps Allah will bring about something new thereafter' [Talaq 65:1]. So what new matter can come about after the third pronouncement of divorce?"
