A man named Abu Sahba used to ask Ibn Abbas many questions. He said, "Do you not know that when a man divorced his wife three times before consummating the marriage, they used to count it as a single divorce during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and the early part of Umar's caliphate?"Ibn Abbas replied, "Yes. When a man divorced his wife three times before consummating the marriage, they used to count it as a single divorce during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and the early part of Umar's caliphate. But when Umar saw that people were pronouncing it repeatedly, he said, 'Make the three divorces binding upon them.'"
