I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came to him and said that he had divorced his wife three times.Ibn Abbas remained silent, so much so that I thought he was going to return her to him. Then he said, "One of you goes off and commits an act of folly, then comes saying, 'Ibn Abbas, Ibn Abbas!' Indeed, Allah has said, 'And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out' [Talaq 65:2]. You did not fear Allah, so I find no way out for you. You disobeyed your Lord, and your wife is irrevocably separated from you. Allah has said, 'Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them' [Talaq 65:1] at the start of their waiting period."

كنت عند ابن عباس فجاءه رجل فقال إنه طلق امرأته ثلاثا قال فسكت حتى ظننت أنه رادها إليه ثم قال ينطلق أحدكم فيركب الحموقة ثم يقول يا ابن عباس يا ابن عباس وإن الله قال {ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا} وإنك لم تتق الله فلم أجد لك مخرجا عصيت ربك وبانت منك امرأتك وإن الله قال {يا أيها النبي إذا طلقتم النساء فطلقوهن} في قبل عدتهن
[Its chain of transmission is sahih] Nasai narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra, hadith no. 11602, and Tabari in his tafsir, 28, and Tabarani in Mujam al-Kabir, 11/88, 89, hadith no. 1139, from the hadith of Ismail with this wording. Ibn Hajar graded it sahih in al-Fath, 9/362. It has been transmitted through multiple corroborating chains from Ibn Abbas that he issued a fatwa that a triple divorce takes effect on a wife who had been consummated with, whereas for one who had not yet been consummated with, he used to consider it to count as only one.His statement "during their waiting period" is an interpretation from Ibn Abbas, and he used to recite it as "for their waiting period," as found in Mujam al-Kabir by Tabarani, 11/95, hadith no. 11157. As for the hadith of Abu Dawud from Hammad bin Zayd, I could not find it with a connected chain, 11157, and this applies to the wife who had not yet been consummated with, if it is sound.
