Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, addressed us and said, "Do not go to excess in the dowries of women, for if it were a mark of honor in this world or a sign of piety before Allah, the Prophet ﷺ would have been the foremost among you in that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never gave any of his wives a dowry, nor did he receive a dowry for any of his daughters, exceeding twelve uqiyahs."

خطبنا عمر رحمه الله فقال ألا لا تغالوا بصدق النساء فإنها لو كانت مكرمة في الدنيا أو تقوى عند الله لكان أولاكم بها النبي ﷺ ما أصدق رسول الله ﷺ امرأة من نسائه ولا أصدقت امرأة من بناته أكثر من ثنتي عشرة أوقية
[Hasan] Reported by Tirmidhi, Nikah, chapter 23, no. 1114m, and Nasai, no. 3351, from the hadith of Ayub Sakhtiyani through this route. Ibn Majah also reported it, no. 1887, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Sirin through this route. Tirmidhi said, "hasan sahih." Hakim graded it sahih (2/109, 175, 176), and Dhahabi agreed with him.Muhammad bin Sirin heard it from Abu Ajfa. Ahmad reported it (1/48), as did others.
