When Allah granted His Messenger ﷺ the conquest of Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among them, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "Allah held back the elephant from Mecca and gave His Messenger and the believers power over it. It has been made lawful for me only for an hour of the day, then it shall remain sacred until the Day of Resurrection. Its trees are not to be cut, its game is not to be startled, and its lost property is not to be picked up except by one who will announce it publicly."Abbas said, or perhaps the narrator said that Abbas said, "Messenger of Allah, except for the idhkhir grass, for it is used in our graves and our homes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Except for the idhkhir."
حدثنا أحمد بن حنبل حدثنا الوليد بن مسلم حدثنا الأوزاعي حدثني يحيى يعني ابن أبي كثير عن أبي سلمة
لما فتح الله تعالى على رسول الله ﷺ مكة قام رسول الله ﷺ فيهم فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال إن الله حبس عن مكة الفيل وسلط عليها رسوله والمؤمنين وإنما أحلت لي ساعة من النهار ثم هي حرام إلى يوم القيامة لا يعضد شجرها ولا ينفر صيدها ولا تحل لقطتها إلا لمنشد فقال عباس أو قال قال العباس يا رسول الله إلا الإذخر فإنه لقبورنا وبيوتنا فقال رسول الله ﷺ إلا الإذخر
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Lost Property, chapter "How is lost property found in Makkah to be identified?" (no. 2434), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj, chapter "The sanctity of Makkah and the prohibition of hunting its game and cutting its vegetation" (no. 1355), from the hadith of Walid bin Muslim, and it is also found in Musnad Ahmad (2/238).
