When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, we had a camel which Abu Maqil dedicated for the cause of Allah. Then illness struck us, and Abu Maqil passed away. The Prophet ﷺ set out for the pilgrimage, and when he completed it, I came to him.He asked, "Umm Maqil, what kept you from coming with us?"She replied, "We had made our preparations, but Abu Maqil died. We had a camel that we used to perform pilgrimage on, but Abu Maqil had dedicated it for the cause of Allah."He said, "Why did you not go out on it? Pilgrimage is in the cause of Allah. But since you missed this pilgrimage with us, perform Umrah in Ramadan, for it is equivalent to a pilgrimage."She used to say, "A pilgrimage is a pilgrimage and an Umrah is an Umrah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this to me, and I do not know whether it was meant for me alone."

لما حج رسول الله ﷺ حجة الوداع وكان لنا جمل فجعله أبو معقل في سبيل الله وأصابنا مرض وهلك أبو معقل وخرج النبي ﷺ فلما فرغ من حجه جئته فقال يا أم معقل ما منعك أن تخرجي معنا قالت لقد تهيأنا فهلك أبو معقل وكان لنا جمل هو الذي نحج عليه فأوصى به أبو معقل في سبيل الله قال فهلا خرجت عليه فإن الحج في سبيل الله فأما إذ فاتتك هذه الحجة معنا فاعتمري في رمضان فإنها كحجة فكانت تقول الحج حجة والعمرة عمرة وقد قال هذا لي رسول الله ﷺ ما أدري ألي خاصة
Sourcing. Its chain is daif. Bayhaqi narrated it in 6/274, from the hadith of Ahmad bin Khalid, with this wording. Ibn Ishaq narrated it using "an" (without specifying his source), but the basis of the hadith is sahih, narrated by Tirmidhi, hadith no. 939, "An umrah performed in Ramadan equals a hajj."
