Jafar bin Muhammad reported,

We entered upon Jabir bin Abdullah, and when we reached him, he asked about the people present until he came to me. I said, "I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn." He reached out his hand toward my head and unfastened my upper button, then unfastened my lower button, then placed his palm between my chest. I was a young lad at that time. He said, "Welcome to you, nephew. Ask whatever you wish."So I questioned him, and he was blind. The time for prayer came, so he stood up wrapped in a small woven garment, meaning a patched cloth. Whenever he placed it on his shoulder, its two ends would slip back because it was so small. He led us in prayer, with his cloak beside him on the clothes rack.I said, "Tell me about the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He gestured with his hand and counted off nine, then said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained for nine years without performing the pilgrimage. Then in the tenth year, it was announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would be performing the pilgrimage. A great many people came to Medina, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and we set out with him until we came to Dhul-Hulayfa. There Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, 'What should I do?'He said, 'Bathe, secure yourself with a cloth, and enter ihram.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the mosque, then mounted Qaswa. When his she-camel rose with him onto the open plain, I looked as far as my eyes could see in front of him, and there were riders and walkers. The same on his right, the same on his left, and the same behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed the talbiyah of pure monotheism, 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-nimata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.' The people called out the same talbiyah they were accustomed to using, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not reject any of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept to his own talbiyah."Jabir said, "We had no intention except for hajj. We did not know about umrah. When we reached the House with him, he touched the Corner, then jogged three circuits and walked four. Then he advanced to the Station of Ibrahim and recited, 'And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer' [Baqarah 2:125]. He placed the Station between himself and the House."He said, "My father used to say," and Ibn Nufayl and Uthman said, "I do not know it except that he attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ." Sulayman said, "I do not know it except that he said," "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two rakahs, 'Say, He is Allah, the One' and 'Say, O you disbelievers.'Then he returned to the House and touched the Corner, then went out through the gate to Safa. When he drew near to Safa, he recited, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' [Baqarah 2:158]. 'We begin with what Allah began with.' So he began with Safa and ascended it until he could see the House. He magnified Allah, declared His oneness, and said, 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.' Then he made supplication in between, saying this three times. Then he descended toward Marwa. When his feet reached the lowest part of the valley, he jogged through the bottom of the valley. When he ascended, he walked, until he came to Marwa. He did at Marwa what he had done at Safa. When he was at his final round at Marwa, he said, 'If I had known about my situation what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit ihram and make it an umrah.'So all the people exited ihram and shortened their hair, except for the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them.Suraqa bin Jasham stood up and said, 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is this for our year only or forever?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said, 'Umrah has entered into hajj like this,' twice. 'No, rather it is for ever and ever. No, rather it is for ever and ever.'Ali رضي الله عنه arrived from Yemen with the Prophet's ﷺ sacrificial animals. He found that Fatimah رضي الله عنها was among those who had exited ihram. She had put on dyed garments and applied kohl. Ali objected to that and said, 'Who told you to do this?'She said, 'My father.'Ali used to say in Iraq, 'I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complaining about Fatimah for what she had done, and seeking the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ ruling on what I had heard from her. I told him I had objected to her actions, and that she said her father had told her to do this.'He said, 'She spoke truly. She spoke truly. What did you say when you intended hajj?'I said, 'O Allah, I enter ihram with the same intention as Your Messenger ﷺ.'He said, 'I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not exit ihram.'The total of the sacrificial animals that Ali had brought from Yemen and that the Prophet ﷺ had brought from Medina was one hundred. So all the people exited ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them. When the Day of Tarwiyah came and they headed toward Mina, they entered ihram for hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his camel and prayed at Mina the noon, afternoon, sunset, evening, and dawn prayers. Then he waited a short while until the sun rose, and ordered that a tent of hair be pitched for him at Namira. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then proceeded, and Quraysh did not doubt that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stop at the Sacred Landmark at Muzdalifa, as Quraysh used to do in the pre-Islamic era. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed on until he came to Arafa, where he found that the tent had been pitched for him at Namira. He alighted there. When the sun had passed its zenith, he ordered that Qaswa be prepared, and she was saddled for him. He rode until he came to the bottom of the valley, where he addressed the people. He said, 'Your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Indeed, every matter of the pre-Islamic era is under my feet, abolished. The bloodshed of the pre-Islamic era is abolished, and the first blood I abolish is our own blood,' (Uthman said, 'the blood of Ibn Rabia,' and Sulayman said, 'the blood of Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib'). Some of them said he had been put out to nurse among the Banu Saad, and Huzayl killed him. 'The usury of the pre-Islamic era is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our own usury, the usury of Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. It is all abolished.Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah and have made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. You have the right over them that they should not allow anyone you dislike onto your beds. If they do, then strike them with a strike that is not severe. They have the right over you to be provided with food and clothing in a fitting manner.I have left among you something that, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray, the Book of Allah. You will be questioned about me, so what will you say?'They said, 'We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your duty, and given sincere counsel.'He then raised his index finger toward the sky and pointed it at the people, saying, 'O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness.'Then Bilal called the adhan, then the iqamah, and he prayed the noon prayer. Then he gave the iqamah and prayed the afternoon prayer, with no prayer between them. Then he mounted Qaswa and came to the standing place. He set the belly of his she-camel Qaswa toward the rocks and placed the path of the pedestrians in front of him. He faced the qiblah and remained standing until the sun set and the yellowness diminished slightly when the disc disappeared. He took Usama up behind him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set off, having tightened Qaswa's reins so much that her head was touching the saddle's pommel. He was saying with his right hand, 'Calmly, people. Calmly, people.' Whenever he came to a hill, he loosened her reins a little so she could climb, until he reached Muzdalifa. There he combined the sunset and evening prayers with one adhan and two iqamahs. Uthman said, 'He did not perform any voluntary prayer between them.' Then they agreed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down until dawn broke, then he prayed the dawn prayer when morning became clear to him. Sulayman said, 'with an adhan and an iqamah.' Then they agreed. Then he mounted Qaswa until he came to the Sacred Landmark and ascended it. Uthman and Sulayman said, 'He faced the qiblah and praised Allah, magnified Him, and declared His oneness.' Uthman added, 'and declared His unity.' He remained standing until it grew very light. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set off before the sun rose, taking Fadl bin Abbas behind him. Fadl was a man with handsome hair, fair-skinned and good-looking.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set off, some women in litters passed by traveling along, and Fadl began to look at them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand over Fadl's face. Fadl turned his face to the other side, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his hand to the other side. Fadl turned his face to the other side again, looking, until he came to Muhassir, where he urged his mount on a little. He took the middle road that brings you out to the Greater Jamra until he came to the Jamra near the tree. He pelted it with seven pebbles, saying takbir with each pebble, pebbles like those used in slings. He pelted from the bottom of the valley. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the place of sacrifice and slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand. He commanded Ali to slaughter the rest, and shared his sacrificial animals with him. Then he ordered that a piece from each camel be taken and placed in a pot, which was cooked. They both ate from its meat and drank from its broth.Sulayman said, "Then he mounted." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded down to the House and prayed the noon prayer in Mecca. Then he came to the Banu Abdul-Muttalib, who were drawing water at Zamzam, and said, 'Draw water, Banu Abdul-Muttalib. Were it not that the people would overwhelm you in your provision of water, I would draw water with you.' So they handed him a bucket and he drank from it.

Sahih
