Abu Tufayl reported,

I said to Ibn Abbas, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ramal around the House and that this is a sunnah."He replied, "They have spoken truly and they have spoken falsely."I asked, "What is true in what they said and what is false?"He said, "They spoke truly in that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did perform ramal, but they spoke falsely in claiming it is a sunnah. During the time of Hudaybiyyah, Quraysh said, 'Leave Muhammad and his companions alone until they die like worms die.' When they made a treaty with him that he and his companions would come the following year and stay in Mecca for three days, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived while the polytheists were on the side of Quayqian. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, 'Perform ramal around the House three times.' But this is not a sunnah."I said, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went between Safa and Marwa on his camel and that this is a sunnah."He replied, "They have spoken truly and they have spoken falsely."I asked, "What is true in what they said and what is false?"He said, "They spoke truly in that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did go between Safa and Marwa on his camel, but they spoke falsely in claiming it is a sunnah. The people would not push others away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor clear a path for him, so he went on a camel so that they could hear his words, see his position, and so their hands could not reach him."

عن أبي الطفيل قال

قلت لابن عباس يزعم قومك أن رسول الله ﷺ قد رمل بالبيت وأن ذلك سنة قال صدقوا وكذبوا قلت وما صدقوا وما كذبوا قال صدقوا قد رمل رسول الله ﷺ وكذبوا ليس بسنة إن قريشا قالت زمن الحديبية دعوا محمدا وأصحابه حتى يموتوا موت النغف فلما صالحوه على أن يجيئوا من العام المقبل فيقيموا بمكة ثلاثة أيام فقدم رسول الله ﷺ والمشركون من قبل قعيقعان فقال رسول الله ﷺ لأصحابه ارملوا بالبيت ثلاثا وليس بسنة قلت يزعم قومك أن رسول الله ﷺ طاف بين الصفا والمروة على بعيره وأن ذلك سنة فقال صدقوا وكذبوا قلت ما صدقوا وما كذبوا قال صدقوا قد طاف رسول الله ﷺ بين الصفا والمروة على بعيره وكذبوا ليس بسنة كان الناس لا يدفعون عن رسول الله ﷺ ولا يصرفون عنه فطاف على بعير ليسمعوا كلامه وليروا مكانه ولا تناله أيديهم
