I went on a military expedition with Zayd bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabia, and I found a whip. They said to me, "Throw it away."I said, "No, but if I find its owner I will return it, otherwise I will make use of it."Then I performed the pilgrimage and passed through Medina, where I asked Ubayy bin Kaab about it.He said, "I once found a pouch containing a hundred Dinars. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year. Then I came to him again and he said, 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year. Then I came to him and he said, 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year. Then I came to him and said, 'I have not found anyone who recognizes it.' He said, 'Remember its number, its string, and its container. If its owner comes, return it, otherwise make use of it.'"The narrator said, "I do not know whether he said, 'Announce it,' three times or only once."
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of Lost Property, chapter "If the owner of the lost property describes its identifying marks, it should be given to him," hadith no. 2426, and Muslim in the Book of Lost Property, chapter "Knowledge of the tie-string and the wrapping, and the ruling on stray sheep and camels," hadith no. 1723, from the hadith of Shubah, with this same chain.
