We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came to him carrying a piece of gold the size of an egg and said, "Messenger of Allah, I obtained this from a mine. Take it, for it is charity. I own nothing besides it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. Then the man approached him from his right side and said the same thing, but he turned away from him. Then he came from his left side, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him again. Then he came from behind him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and flung it at him. Had it struck him, it would have hurt him or wounded him.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "One of you brings everything he owns and says, 'This is charity,' then sits down begging from people. The best charity is that which is given out of sufficiency."
حدثنا موسى بن إسمعيل حدثنا حماد عن محمد بن إسحق عن عاصم بن عمر بن قتادة عن محمود بن لبيد
كنا عند رسول الله ﷺ إذ جاءه رجل بمثل بيضة من ذهب فقال يا رسول الله أصبت هذه من معدن فخذها فهي صدقة ما أملك غيرها فأعرض عنه رسول الله ﷺ ثم أتاه من قبل ركنه الأيمن فقال مثل ذلك فأعرض عنه ثم أتاه من قبل ركنه الأيسر فأعرض عنه رسول الله ﷺ ثم أتاه من خلفه فأخذها رسول الله ﷺ فحذفه بها فلو أصابته لأوجعته أو لعقرته فقال رسول الله ﷺ يأتي أحدكم بما يملك فيقول هذه صدقة ثم يقعد يستكف الناس خير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى
With it, and he graded it sahih.Sourcing, its chain is daif. Darimi narrated it, no. 1666, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama. Ibn Khuzayma narrated it, no. 2441, and Hakim narrated it meeting the criterion of Muslim, 1/413, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Ibn Ishaq narrated it using the ambiguous transmission form ('an'), and Hafiz claimed in Nukat ala Ibn Salah (1/360) that he had seen him state explicitly that he heard it, in Musnad Abu Yaala. Allah knows best, but that has not been established. So the hadith is hasan.The hadith, "The best charity is that given out of surplus wealth," is sahih, as will come, no. 1676.
