The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while he was on the pulpit, speaking about charity, refraining from begging, and asking, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that asks."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter "No Charity Except from Surplus Wealth," hadith no. 1429, from Abdullah bin Maslama Qanabi, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter "Explaining that the Upper Hand is Better than the Lower Hand," etc., hadith no. 1033, from the hadith of Malik through this same chain, and it is found in Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 2/998.His statement "the ones who conceal their need" is anomalous (shadh).
