When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, we used to give zakat al-fitr on behalf of every young and old, free person and slave, a saa of food, or a saa of dried yogurt, or a saa of barley, or a saa of dates, or a saa of raisins. We continued to give it this way until Muawiya came on pilgrimage or for umrah, and he addressed the people from the pulpit. Among the things he said to the people was, "I am of the view that two mudds of Syrian wheat are equivalent to a saa of dates." So the people adopted that.Abu Saeed said, "As for me, I will continue to give it the original way for as long as I live."

كنا نخرج إذ كان فينا رسول الله ﷺ زكاة الفطر عن كل صغير وكبير حر أو مملوك صاعا من طعام أو صاعا من أقط أو صاعا من شعير أو صاعا من تمر أو صاعا من زبيب فلم نزل نخرجه حتى قدم معاوية حاجا أو معتمرا فكلم الناس على المنبر فكان فيما كلم به الناس أن قال إني أرى أن مدين من سمراء الشام تعدل صاعا من تمر فأخذ الناس بذلك فقال أبو سعيد فأما أنا فلا أزال أخرجه أبدا ما عشت
Sourcing, Muslim narrated it in the chapter on zakat, in the section on Zakat al-Fitr owed by Muslims in dates and barley, hadith 985, from Abdullah bin Maslama. Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on zakat, in the section on the charity of Zakat al-Fitr being a saa of barley, hadith 1505, through the hadith of Iyad bin Abdullah, with the same wording.One man mentioned within it the phrase "or a saa of wheat," but this addition is not preserved as reliable.
