Mughira bin Shuba reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell behind the group, and he mentioned this story. He said, "We came upon the people while Abdul-Rahman bin Awf was leading them in the dawn prayer. When he saw the Prophet ﷺ, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to continue. So the Prophet ﷺ and I prayed one rak'ah behind him. When Abdul-Rahman gave the closing salaam, the Prophet ﷺ stood up and prayed the rak'ah he had missed, without adding anything more to it."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Bayhaqi narrated it (2/352) from the hadith of Abu Dawud through the same route. Qatada conceals his sources and narrated this using the ambiguous "an" formula, but the previous hadith, no. 149, makes it unnecessary.
