The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever seeks forgiveness has not persisted in sin, even if he returns to it seventy times in a day."
[Hasan] Tirmidhi transmitted it, Supplications [chapter, "What has been repeatedly said about one who seeks forgiveness..."], no. 3559, from the hadith of Uthman bin Waqid, with this wording, and he said, "Gharib... and its chain of transmission is not strong." Ibn Kathir graded it hasan in his Tafsir, 1/416, and in another copy, 2/106, while Ibn Madini graded it daif, and this is the correct view. The hadith has a gharib hasan corroborating narration in Tabarani's Al-Dua (1797), so with this corroboration the hadith is hasan.
