I visited Khabab when he had been cauterized on his stomach, and he said, "I do not know of anyone among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ who has endured trials like the ones I have endured. There was a time during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ when I could not find a single dirham, yet now there are forty thousand in a corner of my house. Were it not that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us, or forbade that we wish for death, I would have wished for it."

دخلت على خباب وقد اكتوى في بطنه فقال ما أعلم أحدا لقي من أصحاب النبي ﷺ من البلاء ما لقيت لقد كنت وما أجد درهما على عهد النبي ﷺ وفي ناحية من بيتي أربعون ألفا ولولا أن رسول الله ﷺ نهانا أو نهى أن نتمنى الموت لتمنيت
[Its chain of transmission is sahih] Ibn Majah also narrated it in the Book of Zuhd, Chapter on Building and Destruction, no. 4163, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq through the same route. The hadith has multiple paths of transmission in Bukhari, no. 5672, and Muslim, no. 2681, and others.On the same subject, there is a narration from Abu Hurairah [Bukhari, no. 5673, and Muslim, no. 2682], from Anas [to come, no. 971], and from Jabir [Ahmad, 3/332].
