The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman performed tamattu, and the first to forbid it was Muawiya.This is a hasan sahih hadith.
حدثنا أبو موسى محمد بن المثنى حدثنا عبد الله بن إدريس عن ليث عن طاوس
تمتع رسول الله ﷺ وأبو بكر وعمر وعثمان وأول من نهى عنها معاوية هذا حديث حسن صحيح
Its chain of transmission is sahih, and it is agreed upon. Bukhari transmitted it in the Hajj, chapter on the talbiyah, no. 1549, and Muslim, no. 1184, from the hadith of Nafi through this route.There is also a report on this subject from Ibn Masud [Nasai, no. 2752], Jabir [Abu Dawud, no. 1813], Ayesha [Bukhari, no. 1550], Ibn Abbas [Nasai, no. 3009, and Ahmad, 1/267], and Abu Hurairah [Nasai, no. 2753, and Ibn Majah, no. 2920].
