The Prophet ﷺ sent a man from Banu Makhzum to collect the zakat, and the man said to Abu Rafi, "Come along with me so that you may get a share of it."Abu Rafi replied, "Not until I go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him."So he went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Charity is not lawful for us, and the freed clients of a people are considered part of them."
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapters on zakat, in the section on charity given to Banu Hashim, hadith no. 1650, from the hadith of Shubah with this wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith no. 2344, as did Ibn Hibban (al-Ihsan) no. 3282, and Hakim, who said it meets the standard of the two Shaykhs, no. 4041, and Dhahabi agreed with him. It has many corroborating narrations in Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
