A man suffered a loss during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in fruits he had purchased, and his debts grew heavy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give him charity."So the people gave him charity, but it did not amount to enough to settle his debt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to his creditors, "Take what you find, and you have nothing beyond that."
حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا الليث عن بكير بن عبد الله بن الأشج عن عياض بن عبد الله
أصيب رجل في عهد رسول الله ﷺ في ثمار ابتاعها فكثر دينه فقال رسول الله ﷺ تصدقوا عليه فتصدق الناس عليه فلم يبلغ ذلك وفاء دينه فقال رسول الله ﷺ لغرمائه خذوا ما وجدتم وليس لكم إلا ذلك
Muslim also narrated it in the chapter on musaqah, the section on the recommendation of reducing debt, hadith 1556, from Qutayba with the same wording. On this subject, there are also narrations from Ayesha [Bayhaqi 22/7], Juwayriyyah [perhaps referring to the hadith in Mustadrak 28/4], and Anas [Abu Dawud, hadith 1641].
