We stopped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a resting place, and people began passing by. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask, "Who is this, Abu Hurayrah?"I would reply, "So-and-so."He would say, "What an excellent servant of Allah this is."Then he would ask, "Who is this?"I would reply, "So-and-so."He would say, "What a wretched servant of Allah this is."This continued until Khalid bin Walid passed by. He asked, "Who is this?"I replied, "This is Khalid bin Walid."He said, "What an excellent servant of Allah Khalid bin Walid is, a sword among the swords of Allah."
حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا الليث عن هشام بن سعد عن زيد بن أسلم
نزلنا مع رسول الله ﷺ منزلا فجعل الناس يمرون فيقول رسول الله ﷺ من هذا يا أبا هريرة فأقول فلان فيقول نعم عبد الله هذا ويقول من هذا فأقول فلان فيقول بئس عبد الله هذا حتى مر خالد بن الوليد فقال من هذا فقلت هذا خالد بن الوليد فقال نعم عبد الله خالد بن الوليد سيف من سيوف الله
Sourcing, hasan. The hadith has corroborating narrations in Ahmad, 2/360, Ibn Asakir, and others. On this subject there is also a narration from Abu Bakr Siddiq [Ahmad, 8/1, and Hakim, 3/298].
