The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you stands to pray, let him not wipe the pebbles, for mercy is facing him."
Its chain of transmission is hasan. Abu Dawud also reported it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on brushing pebbles during prayer, hadith no. 945, as did Ibn Majah, hadith no. 1027, and Nasai, 6/3, hadith no. 1192, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna with the same wording. Zuhri explicitly stated that he heard it directly, and Abu Ahwas is hasan al-hadith, as will come up at 909. Ibn Khuzayma graded the hadith sahih, hadith nos. 913 and 914, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith nos. 481 and 482, and Ibn Jarud, hadith no. 219, and the Hafiz in Bulugh Maram, hadith no. 189, and Nawawi affirmed its strength. On this subject there are also reports from Ali [mentioned earlier at 282 in abridged form, and Ahmad, 82/1, 146], Huzaifa [Ahmad, 5/385, 402], Jabir bin Abdullah [Ahmad, 3000, 30, 328, 384, 393], and Muayqib [coming up at 380].
