The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon to us when Hasan and Husayn came in wearing two red shirts, walking and stumbling. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the pulpit, picked them up, and placed them in front of him. Then he said, "Allah has spoken the truth, 'Your wealth and your children are only a trial' [Taghabun 64:15]. I looked at these two boys walking and stumbling, and I could not bear it until I interrupted my speech and lifted them up."
[Its isnad is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on the imam interrupting the sermon for something that arises, no. 1109, and Nasai, 3/108, no. 1414, from the hadith of Husayn bin Waqid, through the same route. Tabari graded it sahih in his Tafsir, 28/81, as did Ibn Khuzayma, no. 1456, 1801, Ibn Hibban, no. 2230, and Hakim, 1/287, 4/189, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
