On the day of Hudaybiyah, a group of the polytheists came out to us, among them Suhayl bin Amr and several of the chiefs of the polytheists. They said, "Messenger of Allah, some of our sons, brothers, and slaves have come out to you. They have no understanding of religion, and they have only fled to escape our wealth and properties, so return them to us."He replied, "If they have no understanding of religion, we will teach them."Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "People of Quraysh, you must desist, or Allah will send against you a man whose heart Allah has tested for faith, and he will strike your necks with the sword over this religion."They asked, "Who is he, Messenger of Allah?"Abu Bakr asked him, "Who is he, Messenger of Allah?"And Umar asked, "Who is he, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "He is the one mending the sandal." He had given Ali his sandal to mend. Then Ali turned toward us and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him take his seat in the Fire.'"
[Its isnad is daif] Nasai narrated it in Khasais Ali, no. 31, from the hadith of Sharik al-Qadi with this wording. He is known to conceal his source, but he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, as recorded in Ahmad's Fadail al-Sahabah, no. 1105, though the narrator from him, Yahya bin Abdul-Hameed al-Hamani, is very weak. Its basic content is agreed upon, found in Bukhari, no. 106, and Muslim, no. 1, with part of it also in Dawud, no. 2700. Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of Muslim (4/298), and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has corroborating witnesses according to Dhahabi.Waki said, "It is sahih from him," and likewise Mansur said, "Its isnad is sahih."
