Were it not for a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would not have stood up. He mentioned the tribulations and spoke of them as being near at hand. Then a man passed by, wrapped in a garment, and he said, "This man on that day will be upon guidance."So I got up and went to him, and there he was, Uthman bin Affan. I turned his face toward me and asked, "This man?"He replied, "Yes."
حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا عبد الوهاب الثقفي حدثنا أيوب عن أبي قلابة عن أبي الأشعث الصنعاني أن خطباء قامت بالشام وفيهم رجال من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ فقام آخرهم رجل يقال له
لولا حديث سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ ما قمت وذكر الفتن فقربها فمر رجل مقنع في ثوب فقال هذا يومئذ على الهدى فقمت إليه فإذا هو عثمان بن عفان قال فأقبلت عليه بوجهه فقلت هذا قال نعم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ahmad narrated it in 4/236 from the hadith of Ayub Sakhtiyani, with the same wording, and it has another route in Ahmad, 5/33, 35, and Ibn Hibban, hadith 2195, and others, and the hadith has multiple routes.On this topic, there are also reports from Ibn Umar [coming at 3707], Abdullah bin Hawala [Ahmad, 4/109, 110], and Kaab bin Ujra [Ibn Majah, hadith 111].
