The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to give in charity, and at that time I happened to have some wealth, so I said to myself, "Today I will outdo Abu Bakr. If ever I am to outdo him, it will be today."So I brought half of my wealth, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What have you left for your family?"I said, "The same amount."Then Abu Bakr came with everything he had, and the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Abu Bakr, what have you left for your family?"He replied, "I have left them Allah and His Messenger."I said, "By Allah, I will never outdo him in anything again."He said, this is a good and authentic hadith.
[Its chain is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, Chapter on the Concession Regarding That, hadith no. 1678, from the hadith of Fadl bin Dukayn, with this wording. Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of Muslim, 1/414, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
