Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Ali bin Abu Talib came to him and said, "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. This Quran keeps slipping from my heart, and I find myself unable to retain it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Abu Hasan, shall I not teach you words by which Allah will benefit you and will benefit whomever you teach them to, and which will fix what you have learned firmly in your heart?"Ali said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah, please teach me."He said, "When the night of Friday comes, if you are able to stand in the last third of the night, do so, for it is a witnessed hour in which supplication is answered. My brother Yaqub said to his sons, 'I shall ask forgiveness for you from my Lord' [Yusuf 12:98], meaning, until the night of Friday comes. If you cannot stand at that time, then stand in the middle of the night, and if you cannot do that, stand at the beginning of the night. Pray four cycles of prayer.In the first cycle, recite the Opening of the Book and Surah Yasin. In the second cycle, recite the Opening of the Book and Ha Mim al-Dukhan. In the third cycle, recite the Opening of the Book and Alif Lam Mim Tanzil al-Sajdah. In the fourth cycle, recite the Opening of the Book and Tabarak al-Mufassal.When you have finished the tashahhud, praise Allah and offer beautiful praise to Him, send blessings upon me and do so well, and upon all the other prophets, and seek forgiveness for the believing men and women and for your brothers who preceded you in faith.Then say at the end of all that, 'O Allah, have mercy on me by letting me abandon disobedience forever, as long as You keep me alive. Have mercy on me by sparing me from burdening myself with what does not concern me. Grant me a beautiful perception of what pleases You with regard to me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty, honor, and an unassailable might, I ask You, Allah, Most Merciful, by Your majesty and the light of Your face, to bind my heart to the memorization of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me that I recite it in the manner that pleases You with regard to me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty, honor, and an unassailable might, I ask You, Allah, Most Merciful, by Your majesty and the light of Your face, to illuminate my sight by Your Book, to loosen my tongue with it, to relieve my heart through it, to expand my chest by it, and to wash my body with it. For none other than You can help me toward the truth, and none but You can grant it. There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.'Abu Hasan, do this for three Fridays, or five, or seven, and you will be answered by Allah's permission. By Him who sent me with the truth, it has never failed any believer."Abdullah bin Abbas said, "By Allah, only five or seven weeks passed before Ali came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a similar gathering and said, 'Messenger of Allah, in the past I could only retain four verses or so, and when I would recite them to myself they would slip away. Today I learn forty verses or so, and when I recite them to myself it is as if the Book of Allah is right before my eyes. I used to hear a hadith and when I would repeat it, it would slip from me. Today I hear hadiths, and when I narrate them I do not omit a single letter from them.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him at that, 'A believer, by the Lord of the Kaabah, Abu Hasan!'"

عن ابن عباس أنه قال

بينما نحن عند رسول الله ﷺ إذ جاءه علي بن أبي طالب فقال بأبي أنت وأمي تفلت هذا القرآن من صدري فما أجدني أقدر عليه فقال رسول الله ﷺ يا أبا الحسن أفلا أعلمك كلمات ينفعك الله بهن وينفع بهن من علمته ويثبت ما تعلمت في صدرك قال أجل يا رسول الله فعلمني قال إذا كان ليلة الجمعة فإن استطعت أن تقوم في ثلث الليل الآخر فإنها ساعة مشهودة والدعاء فيها مستجاب وقد قال أخي يعقوب لبنيه {سوف أستغفر لكم ربي} يقول حتى تأتي ليلة الجمعة فإن لم تستطع فقم في وسطها فإن لم تستطع فقم في أولها فصل أربع ركعات تقرأ في الركعة الأولى بفاتحة الكتاب وسورة يس وفي الركعة الثانية بفاتحة الكتاب وحم الدخان وفي الركعة الثالثة بفاتحة الكتاب والم تنزيل السجدة وفي الركعة الرابعة بفاتحة الكتاب وتبارك المفصل فإذا فرغت من التشهد فاحمد الله وأحسن الثناء على الله وصل علي وأحسن وعلى سائر النبيين واستغفر للمؤمنين والمؤمنات ولإخوانك الذين سبقوك بالإيمان ثم قل في آخر ذلك اللهم ارحمني بترك المعاصي أبدا ما أبقيتني وارحمني أن أتكلف ما لا يعنيني وارزقني حسن النظر فيما يرضيك عني اللهم بديع السموات والأرض ذا الجلال والإكرام والعزة التي لا ترام أسألك يا ألله يا رحمن بجلالك ونور وجهك أن تلزم قلبي حفظ كتابك كما علمتني وارزقني أن أتلوه على النحو الذي يرضيك عني اللهم بديع السموات والأرض ذا الجلال والإكرام والعزة التي لا ترام أسألك يا ألله يا رحمن بجلالك ونور وجهك أن تنور بكتابك بصري وأن تطلق به لساني وأن تفرج به عن قلبي وأن تشرح به صدري وأن تغسل به بدني فإنه لا يعينني على الحق غيرك ولا يؤتيه إلا أنت ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم يا أبا الحسن تفعل ذلك ثلاث جمع أو خمسا أو سبعا تجب بإذن الله والذي بعثني بالحق ما أخطأ مؤمنا قط قال عبد الله بن عباس فوالله ما لبث علي إلا خمسا أو سبعا حتى جاء رسول الله ﷺ في مثل ذلك المجلس فقال يا رسول الله إني كنت فيما خلا لا آخذ إلا أربع آيات أو نحوهن وإذا قرأتهن على نفسي تفلتن وأنا أتعلم اليوم أربعين آية أو نحوها وإذا قرأتها على نفسي فكأنما كتاب الله بين عيني ولقد كنت أسمع الحديث فإذا رددته تفلت وأنا اليوم أسمع الأحاديث فإذا تحدثت بها لم أخرم منها حرفا فقال له رسول الله ﷺ عند ذلك مؤمن ورب الكعبة يا أبا الحسن
