He used to come to our place of prayer and converse with us. One day the time for prayer came, and we said to him, "Step forward and lead."He replied, "Let one of you step forward, and let me tell you why I will not lead. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever visits a people should not lead them in prayer. Rather, let one of their own lead them.'"
حدثنا محمود بن غيلان وهناد قالا حدثنا وكيع عن أبان بن يزيد العطار عن بديل بن ميسرة العقيلي عن أبي عطية رجل منهم قال كان
يأتينا في مصلانا يتحدث فحضرت الصلاة يوما فقلنا له تقدم فقال ليتقدم بعضكم حتى أحدثكم لم لا أتقدم سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من زار قوما فلا يؤمهم وليؤمهم رجل منهم
[Hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on the leadership of the visitor, no. 596, and Nasai, 2/80, no. 788, from the hadith of Abu Aban Attar with this wording, and Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 1520. Abu Atiya is hasan al-hadith, and the hadith has corroborating narrations.
