It is reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that when he stood for the obligatory prayer, he would raise his hands level with his shoulders. He would do the same when he had finished his recitation and was about to bow, and he would do it again when he raised his head from bowing. He would not raise his hands at any point during the prayer while he was seated. When he rose from the two prostrations, he would raise his hands likewise and say the takbir. After the opening takbir, he would say, "I have turned my face toward the One who originated the heavens and the earth, devoted in pure faith, and I am not among those who associate partners with Him. Indeed, my prayer, my rites of devotion, my life, and my death are for Allah, Lord of all the worlds, who has no partner. With this I have been commanded, and I am among those who submit. O Allah, You are the King. There is no god but You. Glory be to You. You are my Lord, and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me all my sins, for none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to its best but You. Turn away from me its evil, for none turns away its evil but You. Here I am, at Your service, and all good is in Your hands. I am through You and unto You. There is no escape and no refuge from You except to You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance."Then he would recite. When he bowed, his words during his bowing were, "O Allah, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. You are my Lord. My hearing, my sight, my brain, and my bones are humbled before Allah, Lord of all the worlds."When he raised his head from bowing, he would say, "Allah hears whoever praises Him." Then he would follow it with, "O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens and the earth, filling whatever else You will."When he prostrated, he would say in his prostration, "O Allah, to You I have prostrated, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. You are my Lord. My face has prostrated to the One who created it, fashioned it, and gave it hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators."And when he concluded the prayer he would say, "O Allah, forgive me what I have done before and what I will do, what I have concealed and what I have made public. You are my God. There is no god but You."
[Its isnad is hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on what is said to open the prayer, hadith no. 761, from Hasan bin Ali by this route. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith no. 584, as did Ibn Hibban, Ahmad bin Hanbal, and others. The mountain of knowledge Sulayman bin Dawud Hashimi said, "This, in our view, is like the hadith of Zuhri from Salim from his father." His statement, "then when he rises from two prostrations," means from the two rakahs, as is found in Juz Raf al-Yadayn by Bukhari.Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad is hasan al-hadith, as Dhahabi said in Siyar Alam al-Nubala, 8/168, 169.
