The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When Allah created Adam and breathed the spirit into him, Adam sneezed and said, 'Praise be to Allah,' so he praised Allah by His leave. His Lord then said to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you, Adam. Go to those angels, to a group of them sitting together, and say, Peace be upon you.'So he went and said, 'Peace be upon you.'They replied, 'And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.'Then he returned to his Lord, who said, 'This is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants among themselves.'Then Allah said to him, with His hands closed, 'Choose whichever of them you wish.'Adam said, 'I choose the right hand of my Lord, and both my Lord's hands are right hands, blessed.'Then He opened it, and there were Adam and his offspring. Adam asked, 'My Lord, who are these?'He said, 'These are your descendants.'Each person had his lifespan written between his eyes. Among them was a man more radiant than the rest, or among the most radiant. Adam asked, 'My Lord, who is this?'He said, 'This is your son Dawud. I have written for him a lifespan of forty years.'Adam said, 'My Lord, increase his lifespan.'He said, 'That is what I have decreed for him.'Adam said, 'My Lord, then I have given him sixty years from my own lifespan.'He said, 'That is between you and him.'Then Adam dwelt in Paradise as long as Allah willed, and then was sent down from it. Adam was counting his own years. Then the Angel of Death came to him, and Adam said to him, 'You have come too soon. A thousand years were written for me.'The angel said, 'Yes, but you gave sixty years to your son Dawud.'But Adam denied it, so his descendants denied. He forgot, so his descendants forgot. From that day, the command was given for written records and witnesses."

[Its isnad is hasan]. Nasai narrated it in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla, no. 218, and in Kubra, no. 10046, from the hadith of Safwan, in abridged form. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan): 6134, as did Hakim, 4/263, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The narration of Zayd bin Aslam has already been mentioned at 3076.
