"He frowned and turned away" [Abasa 80:1] was revealed concerning Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and kept saying, "Messenger of Allah, guide me."At that moment there was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one of the great men among the polytheists, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept turning away from Ibn Umm Maktum and giving his attention to the other man, saying to him, "Do you see any harm in what I am saying?"The man replied, "No."It was concerning this that the verse was revealed.
حدثنا سعيد بن يحيى بن سعيد الأموي قال حدثني أبي قال هذا ما عرضنا على هشام بن عروة عن أبيه
أنزل {عبس وتولى} في ابن أم مكتوم الأعمى أتى رسول الله ﷺ فجعل يقول يا رسول الله أرشدني وعند رسول الله ﷺ رجل من عظماء المشركين فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يعرض عنه ويقبل على الآخر ويقول أترى بما أقول بأسا فيقول لا ففي هذا أنزل
[Its isnad is sahih]. Hakim narrated it in 2/514 from the hadith of Saeed bin Yahya through this route, and graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), saying, "A group narrated it in mursal form from Hisham bin Urwa." Dhahabi said, "That is the correct version, but this is not a defect that invalidates the hadith, and the hadith has corroborating witnesses."
