The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite to the jinn, nor did he see them. He had set out with a group of his companions heading for the market of Ukaz. Now the devils had been barred from the news of heaven, and shooting stars were sent against them, so they returned to their people, who asked, "What is the matter with you?"They said, "We have been barred from the news of heaven, and shooting stars have been sent against us."Their people said, "Nothing has come between us and the news of heaven except some event that has occurred. So travel the eastern and western reaches of the earth and find out what it is that has come between you and the news of heaven."So they set off, ranging through the east and west of the earth, searching for what had come between them and the news of heaven. Those of them who had turned toward Tihamah came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Nakhlah as he was on his way to the market of Ukaz, and he was leading his companions in the Fajr prayer. When they heard the Quran they listened intently to it, and they said, "By Allah, this is what has come between you and the news of heaven."At that point they returned to their people and said, "Our people, 'we have heard a wondrous recitation that guides to what is right, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord'" [Jinn 72:1–2].So Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ, "Say, it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened" [Jinn 72:1]. What was revealed to him was the speech of the jinn. With this same chain, Ibn Abbas said regarding the words of the jinn to their people, "When the servant of Allah stood calling upon Him, they crowded around him" [Jinn 72:19], that when they saw him praying and his companions praying along with him, bowing when he bowed and prostrating when he prostrated, they marveled at his companions' obedience to him, and they said to their people, "When the servant of Allah stood calling upon Him, they crowded around him" [Jinn 72:19].He said, this hadith is good and authentic.
