Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, Zubayr, and Miqdad bin Aswad on a mission. He said, "Go until you reach Rawdat Khakh. There you will find a woman traveling on a camel carrying a letter. Take it from her and bring it to me."So we set off, our horses racing with us, until we reached the meadow. There we found the woman, and we said, "Hand over the letter."She replied, "I have no letter with me."We said, "Either you produce the letter, or you remove your clothes."She then took it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it turned out to be from Hatib bin Abu Balta to some of the polytheists in Mecca, informing them of certain matters concerning the Prophet ﷺ.The Prophet ﷺ said, "What is this, Hatib?"He replied, "Do not be hasty with me, Messenger of Allah. I was a man attached to Quraysh but not actually one of them by blood. The Emigrants who are with you have relatives in Mecca through whom they protect their families and property. Since I lacked such kinship among them, I wished to do them a favor so they would protect my relatives. I did not do this out of disbelief, nor as apostasy from my religion, nor out of contentment with disbelief after Islam."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth."Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه said, "Let me strike off the neck of this hypocrite, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He witnessed Badr. How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said, 'Do as you wish, for I have already forgiven you.'"He said, And concerning this incident, this surah was revealed, "You who believe, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies" [Mumtahanah 60:1], and the rest of the surah.Amr said, I saw Ibn Abu Rafi, who was the scribe of Ali bin Abu Talib. This hadith is hasan sahih. On this topic, there are also reports from Umar and Jabir bin Abdullah. More than one narrator has transmitted this hadith from Sufyan bin Uyayna in a similar fashion, mentioning this very phrase, "Either you produce the letter, or you remove your clothes." A similar version of this hadith has also been narrated from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami from Ali. Some of them mentioned in it the wording, "Either you produce the letter, or we will strip you."
