A man came to Abdullah and said, "A storyteller is narrating that smoke will come out of the earth and seize the hearing of the disbelievers, while it will affect the believer like a cold."Abdullah, who was reclining, became angry, sat up, and said, "When one of you is asked about something he knows, let him speak of it." Mansur said, "Let him inform of it. And when he is asked about something he does not know, let him say, 'Allah knows best,' for it is part of a man's knowledge that, when asked about what he does not know, he says, 'Allah knows best.' Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet, 'Say, I do not ask you for any reward for it, nor am I of those who pretend' [Sad 38:86].When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that Quraysh had defied him, he said, 'O Allah, help me against them with seven years like the seven years of Yusuf.' So a famine seized them that consumed everything, until they ate hides and carrion." One of the two narrators said, "Bones."He continued, "And something resembling smoke began to rise from the earth. Abu Sufyan came to him and said, 'Your people are perishing, so pray to Allah for them.' This is the meaning of His saying, 'On the day when the sky brings forth a visible smoke covering the people. This is a painful punishment' [Dukhan 44:10–11]."Mansur said, "This refers to His saying, 'Our Lord, remove the punishment from us, indeed we are believers' [Dukhan 44:12]. Will the punishment of the Hereafter be removed? The mighty seizure, the binding affliction, and the smoke have already passed."One of them said, "And the moon." The other said, "And the Romans."
