The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Najran. The people there said to me, "Do you not recite, 'Sister of Harun', when there was such a long span between Isa and Musa?" I did not know how to answer them, so I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it.He said, "Why did you not tell them that they used to name themselves after their prophets and the righteous people who came before them?"
حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج ومحمد بن المثنى قالا حدثنا ابن إدريس عن أبيه عن سماك بن حرب عن علقمة بن وائل
بعثني رسول الله ﷺ إلى نجران فقالوا لي ألستم تقرءون يا أخت هارون وقد كان بين عيسى وموسى ما كان فلم أدر ما أجيبهم فرجعت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأخبرته فقال ألا أخبرتهم أنهم كانوا يسمون بأنبيائهم والصالحين قبلهم
Muslim also related it in Kitab al-Adab, in the chapter on the prohibition of using Abu Qasim as a kunya and an explanation of which names are recommended, hadith no. 2135, from Abu Saeed Ashaj and Muhammad bin Muthanna, through the same chain.
