Kaab bin Malik reported,

I never stayed behind from any expedition the Messenger of Allah ﷺ undertook, up until the expedition of Tabuk, except for Badr. Yet the Prophet ﷺ never reproached anyone who stayed behind from Badr, for he had set out only intending to intercept the caravan, and Quraysh came out to defend their caravan, so the two sides met without any prior appointment, just as Allah has said. By my life, the noblest of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ battles in the eyes of the people is Badr, but I would not wish to have been present at it in place of my pledge on the night of Uqba, when we bound ourselves firmly to Islam.After that I never stayed behind from the Prophet ﷺ until the expedition of Tabuk, which was the last expedition he undertook. The Prophet ﷺ announced to the people that they were setting out. He then related the hadith in full.Kaab said, I set off to the Prophet ﷺ and found him sitting in the masjid with the Muslims around him, his face shining like the shining of the moon. Whenever something pleased him, his face would shine like that. I came and sat before him, and he said, "Rejoice, Kaab bin Malik, at the best day that has come upon you since your mother gave birth to you."I asked, "Prophet of Allah, is this from Allah or from you?"He replied, "From Allah."Then he recited these verses, "Allah has certainly turned in mercy to the Prophet and to the Emigrants and the Helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship" until he reached "Indeed, Allah is the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful" [Tawbah 9:117–118].Kaab said, and this verse was also revealed concerning us, "Fear Allah and be among the truthful" [Tawbah 9:119].I said, "Prophet of Allah, part of my repentance is that I will speak nothing but the truth, and that I will strip myself of all my wealth as charity to Allah and to His Messenger."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Keep back some of your wealth for yourself, that is better for you."So I said, "Then I will keep back my share at Khaybar."Kaab said, Allah has never granted me a blessing after Islam greater in my own estimation than my truthfulness with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when I told him the truth, I and my two companions, so that we did not lie and perish as the others perished. I hope that Allah has never tested anyone in the matter of truthfulness as He tested me. I have never deliberately told a lie since, and I hope Allah will protect me for the rest of my life.He said, this hadith has also been transmitted from Zuhri through a chain other than this one. It has been reported from Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik, from his uncle Ubaydullah, from Kaab, and other chains have been mentioned as well. Yunus bin Yazid transmitted this hadith from Zuhri, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik, that his father related it to him from Kaab bin Malik.

حدثنا عبد بن حميد أخبرنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن الزهري

عن عبد الرحمن بن كعب بن مالك عن أبيه قال

لم أتخلف عن رسول الله ﷺ في غزوة غزاها حتى كانت غزوة تبوك إلا بدرا ولم يعاتب النبي ﷺ أحدا تخلف عن بدر إنما خرج يريد العير فخرجت قريش مغيثين لعيرهم فالتقوا عن غير موعد كما قال الله عز وجل ولعمري إن أشرف مشاهد رسول الله ﷺ في الناس لبدر وما أحب أني كنت شهدتها مكان بيعتي ليلة العقبة حيث تواثقنا على الإسلام ثم لم أتخلف بعد عن النبي ﷺ حتى كانت غزوة تبوك وهي آخر غزوة غزاها وآذن النبي ﷺ الناس بالرحيل فذكر الحديث بطوله قال فانطلقت إلى النبي ﷺ فإذا هو جالس في المسجد وحوله المسلمون وهو يستنير كاستنارة القمر وكان إذا سر بالأمر استنار فجئت فجلست بين يديه فقال أبشر يا كعب بن مالك بخير يوم أتى عليك منذ ولدتك أمك فقلت يا نبي الله أمن عند الله أم من عندك قال بل من عند الله ثم تلا هؤلاء الآيات {لقد تاب الله على النبي والمهاجرين والأنصار الذين اتبعوه في ساعة العسرة} حتى بلغ {إن الله هو التواب الرحيم} قال وفينا أنزلت أيضا {اتقوا الله وكونوا مع الصادقين} قال قلت يا نبي الله إن من توبتي أن لا أحدث إلا صدقا وأن أنخلع من مالي كله صدقة إلى الله وإلى رسوله فقال النبي ﷺ أمسك عليك بعض مالك فهو خير لك فقلت فإني أمسك سهمي الذي بخيبر قال فما أنعم الله علي نعمة بعد الإسلام أعظم في نفسي من صدقي رسول الله ﷺ حين صدقته أنا وصاحباي ولا نكون كذبنا فهلكنا كما هلكوا وإني لأرجو أن لا يكون الله أبلى أحدا في الصدق مثل الذي أبلاني ما تعمدت لكذبة بعد وإني لأرجو أن يحفظني الله فيما بقي قال وقد روي عن الزهري هذا الحديث بخلاف هذا الإسناد وقد قيل عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله بن كعب بن مالك عن عمه عبيد الله عن كعب وقد قيل غير هذا وروى يونس بن يزيد هذا الحديث عن الزهري عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله بن كعب بن مالك أن أباه حدثه عن كعب بن مالك
