On the day of Badr, when the captives were brought forth, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What do you say about these captives?"The narrator mentioned a long story, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Not one of them shall escape except by ransom or by having his neck struck."Abdullah bin Masud said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, except for Suhayl ibn Bayda, for I have heard him speak of Islam.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. Abdullah continued, "I have never known a day on which I feared more that stones would fall upon me from the sky than that day, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Except for Suhayl ibn al-Bayda.'"He said, "Then the Quran was revealed in support of Umar's view, 'It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has subdued the land' [Anfal 8:67], to the end of the verses."
حدثنا هناد حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن عمرو بن مرة عن أبي عبيدة بن عبد الله
لما كان يوم بدر وجيء بالأسارى قال رسول الله ﷺ ما تقولون في هؤلاء الأسارى فذكر في الحديث قصة طويلة فقال رسول الله ﷺ لا ينفلتن منهم أحد إلا بفداء أو ضرب عنق قال عبد الله بن مسعود فقلت يا رسول الله إلا سهيل ابن بيضاء فإني قد سمعته يذكر الإسلام قال فسكت رسول الله ﷺ قال فما رأيتني في يوم أخوف أن تقع علي حجارة من السماء مني في ذلك اليوم قال حتى قال رسول الله ﷺ إلا سهيل ابن البيضاء قال ونزل القرآن بقول عمر {ما كان لنبي أن يكون له أسرى حتى يثخن في الأرض} إلى آخر الآيات
