Abu Jahl said to the Prophet ﷺ, "We do not call you a liar, but we reject what you have brought." So Allah, the Most High, revealed, "For indeed, they do not call you a liar, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject" [Anam 6:33].Ishaq bin Mansur narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi reported to us from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Najia, that Abu Jahl said to the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned something similar. He did not mention "from Ali" in it, and this version is more authentic.
حدثنا أبو كريب حدثنا معاوية بن هشام عن سفيان عن أبي إسحق عن ناجية بن كعب
أن أبا جهل قال للنبي ﷺ إنا لا نكذبك ولكن نكذب بما جئت به فأنزل الله تعالى {فإنهم لا يكذبونك ولكن الظالمين بآيات الله يجحدون} حدثنا إسحق بن منصور أخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي عن سفيان عن أبي إسحق عن ناجية أن أبا جهل قال للنبي ﷺ فذكر نحوه ولم يذكر فيه عن علي وهذا أصح
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Ibn Abu Hatim narrated it in his Tafsir, 4/1282, no. 7234, from the hadith of Muawiya bin Hisham through this route. Israil also narrated it from Abu Ishaq through this route, and Abu Ishaq used the form "an" without specifying direct hearing. Despite this, Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaikhs, 2/315-316, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Diya also included it in Al-Mukhtarah.The hadith of Ibn Mahdi was narrated by Ibn Abu Hatim, 4/1282, no. 7235, and by Tabari in his Tafsir, 7/116.
