A man from the Ansar had a dispute with Zubayr over the streams of the Harrah which they used to irrigate their date palms. The Ansari said, "Release the water so it may flow through," but Zubayr refused. They brought their dispute to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zubayr, "Irrigate, Zubayr, then send the water on to your neighbor."The Ansari became angry and said, "Messenger of Allah, is it because he is the son of your aunt?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed, and then he said, "Zubayr, irrigate, and hold back the water until it returns to the embankments."Zubayr said, "By Allah, I believe this verse was revealed concerning that incident, 'But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves' [Nisa 4:65]."
حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا الليث بن سعد عن ابن شهاب عن عروة بن الزبير أنه حدثه أن
أن رجلا من الأنصار خاصم الزبير في شراج الحرة التي يسقون بها النخل فقال الأنصاري سرح الماء يمر فأبى عليه فاختصموا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ للزبير اسق يا زبير وأرسل الماء إلى جارك فغضب الأنصاري وقال يا رسول الله أن كان ابن عمتك فتغير وجه رسول الله ﷺ ثم قال يا زبير اسق واحبس الماء حتى يرجع إلى الجدر فقال الزبير والله إني لأحسب هذه الآية نزلت في ذلك {فلا وربك لا يؤمنون حتى يحكموك فيما شجر بينهم} الآية
Agreed upon [by Bukhari and Muslim]. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Virtues, chapter on the obligation of following him, no. 2357, from Qutayba, and Bukhari, no. 2359, from the hadith of Layth with the same wording. It has already appeared at 1363.
