Maqil had married his sister to a man among the Muslims during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She remained with him for a while, then he divorced her once and did not take her back until her waiting period had expired. But he still loved her and she still loved him, so he came asking for her hand along with the other suitors.Maqil said to him, "You fool, I honored you with her and gave her to you in marriage, and you divorced her. By Allah, she will never go back to you. That is the end of the matter for you."Allah knew the man's need for her and her need for her husband, so Allah revealed, "And when you divorce women and they have completed their waiting period" up to His words, "while you do not know" [Baqarah 2:232].When Maqil heard this, he said, "I hear and obey my Lord."Then he called the man and said, "I will marry her to you and honor you."
