"I do not see any blame upon someone who does not perform the saee between Safa and Marwa, and I would not mind if I did not walk between them."She replied, "What a terrible thing you have said, my nephew! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed saee between them, and so did the Muslims. Rather, those who used to enter ihram for the idol Manat the false deity at Mushallal would not walk between Safa and Marwa. So Allah revealed, 'Whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs Umrah, there is no blame upon him for walking between them' [Baqarah 2:158]. Had it been as you say, the verse would have read, 'there is no blame upon him for not walking between them.'"Zuhri said, I mentioned this to Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, and it impressed him. He said, "This is genuine knowledge. I have heard some men of knowledge say that among the Arabs, those who refused to walk between Safa and Marwa would say, 'Our walking between these two stones is a practice from the Days of Ignorance.' Others from the Ansar said, 'We have only been commanded to circumambulate the House, not to walk between Safa and Marwa.' So Allah the Exalted revealed, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' [Baqarah 2:158]."Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman said, "I see that it was revealed concerning both groups."
