He heard Muawiya delivering a sermon in Madinah, saying, "Where are your scholars, people of Madinah? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid this kind of hair extension and say, 'The Children of Israil were only destroyed when their women began using it.'"
حدثنا سويد أخبرنا عبد الله أخبرنا يونس عن الزهري
أنه سمع معاوية بالمدينة يخطب يقول أين علماؤكم يا أهل المدينة إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ ينهى عن هذه القصة ويقول إنما هلكت بنو إسرائيل حين اتخذها نساؤهم
Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Dress and Adornment, Chapter on the Prohibition of Hair-Extending, Having One's Hair Extended, Tattooing, and Being Tattooed, etc., no. 2127, from the hadith of Yunus bin Yazid Ayli, and Bukhari, no. 3468, from the hadith of Zuhri, with this wording.
