A group of Jews entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Death be upon you."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "And upon you."Ayesha said, "Rather, death and the curse of Allah be upon you."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ayesha, Allah loves gentleness in all matters."Ayesha asked, "Did you not hear what they said?"He answered, "I already said, 'And upon you.'"

إن رهطا من اليهود دخلوا على النبي ﷺ فقالوا السام عليك فقال النبي ﷺ عليكم فقالت عائشة بل عليكم السام واللعنة فقال النبي ﷺ يا عائشة إن الله يحب الرفق في الأمر كله قالت عائشة ألم تسمع ما قالوا قال قد قلت عليكم
Agreed upon [by Bukhari and Muslim]. Bukhari narrated it in "The Retraction of Apostates and Obstinate Rebels and Fighting Them," chapter, "If a protected non-Muslim or someone else alludes to insulting the Prophet ﷺ without stating it explicitly... etc.," hadith 6927, and Muslim, hadith 2165, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this wording.On this subject there is also a hadith from Abu Basra Ghifari [Ahmad 6/398, and Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad, hadith 1102, and Nasai in "The Deeds of the Day and Night," hadith 388], and from Ibn Umar [mentioned previously at 1603], and from Anas [coming up at 3310], and Ibn Majah, hadith 3697, and from Abu Abdul-Rahman Juhani [Ibn Majah, hadith 3699].
