He came out from Marwan's place at midday, so we said, "He would not have summoned him at this hour except to ask him about something." We asked him about it, and he said, "Yes, he asked us about matters we had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'May Allah brighten the face of a man who hears a hadith from us and memorizes it until he conveys it to someone else, for many a bearer of knowledge carries it to one who has deeper understanding than himself, and many a bearer of knowledge is not himself a person of understanding.'"

من عند مروان نصف النهار قلنا ما بعث إليه في هذه الساعة إلا لشيء سأله عنه فسألناه فقال نعم سألنا عن أشياء سمعناها من رسول الله ﷺ سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول نضر الله امرأ سمع منا حديثا فحفظه حتى يبلغه غيره فرب حامل فقه إلى من هو أفقه منه ورب حامل فقه ليس بفقيه
Source evaluation. [Its isnad is sahih.] Abu Dawud Sijistani narrated it in the Book of Knowledge, chapter on the virtue of spreading knowledge, hadith no. 3660, from the hadith of Shubah through this route. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith no. 72, as did Busiri. It has corroborating narrations in Hakim, 1/87, 88, and elsewhere.On this same subject, there are also narrations from Abdullah bin Masud [to come, nos. 2657, 2658], Muaz bin Jabal [Tabarani in Awsat, 7/400, hadith no. 6777], Jubayr bin Mutim [Ibn Majah, hadith no. 231], Abu Darda [Darimi, hadith no. 236], and Anas [Ibn Majah, hadith no. 236].
