The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not show open gloating over your brother's misfortune, lest Allah show him mercy and afflict you instead."He said, this is a hasan gharib hadith. Makhul heard hadith from Wathila bin Asqa, Anas bin Malik, and Abu Hind Dari. It is said that he did not hear from any of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ except these three. Makhul Shami's kunya is Abu Abdullah. He was a slave who was later freed. As for Makhul Azdi, he was from Basra and heard from Abdullah bin Umar, and Umarah bin Zazan narrates from him.Ali bin Hujr narrated to us, Ismail bin Ayyash narrated to us from Tamim bin Atiya, who said, I often used to hear Makhul, when asked a question, reply, "Nadanam" (I do not know).

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Khatib also narrated it in his Tarikh (9/95, 96) through the hadith of Umar bin Ismail, with the same wording.Makhul did not explicitly state that he heard it directly in this hadith, and his statement "nadanam" has a daif chain, since Ismail bin Ayyash narrated it using an'ana (without explicitly stating direct hearing).
