He was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A servant does not reach the rank of the God-conscious until he leaves what is harmless out of caution against what is harmful."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي النضر حدثنا أبو النضر حدثنا أبو عقيل الثقفي عبد الله بن عقيل حدثنا عبد الله بن يزيد حدثني ربيعة بن يزيد وعطية بن قيس
وكان من أصحاب النبي ﷺ قال قال رسول الله ﷺ لا يبلغ العبد أن يكون من المتقين حتى يدع ما لا بأس به حذرا لما به البأس
Its isnad is hasan. Ibn Majah also narrated it in the Book of Zuhd, chapter on scrupulousness and piety, no. 4215, from the hadith of Abu Aqeel with the same wording. Hakim graded it sahih (4/319) and Dhahabi agreed with him.Abdullah bin Yazid Dimashqi was deemed reliable by the majority, and his hadith is hasan.
