The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A messenger came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between half of my nation entering Paradise and intercession, so I chose intercession. It is for whoever dies without associating anything with Allah."It has also been narrated from Abu Malih from another man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ from the Prophet ﷺ, without mentioning Awf bin Malik, and the hadith contains a long story.Qutayba narrated to us, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from Abu Malih, from Awf bin Malik, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar.
حدثنا هناد حدثنا عبدة عن سعيد عن قتادة عن أبي المليح
قال رسول الله ﷺ أتاني آت من عند ربي فخيرني بين أن يدخل نصف أمتي الجنة وبين الشفاعة فاخترت الشفاعة وهي لمن مات لا يشرك بالله شيئا وقد روي عن أبي المليح عن رجل آخر من أصحاب النبي ﷺ عن النبي ﷺ ولم يذكر عن عوف بن مالك وفي الحديث قصة طويلة حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا أبو عوانة عن قتادة عن أبي المليح عن عوف بن مالك عن النبي ﷺ نحوه
Sourcing, hasan. Ahmad also reported it, 29/6, from the hadith of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, with the same wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 2593. The hadith has corroborating narrations in Ibn Hibban, no. 2592, and Hakim, 67/1, and others. See Nihaya, my edition, no. 1202.
