A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about righteousness and sin, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Righteousness is good character, and sin is what unsettles your heart and what you would hate for people to find out about."Muhammad bin Bashshar reported to us that Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi reported to them that Muawiya bin Salih reported a similar account, except that in his version the narrator said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ."

أن رجلا سأل رسول الله ﷺ عن البر والإثم فقال النبي ﷺ البر حسن الخلق والإثم ما حاك في نفسك وكرهت أن يطلع عليه الناس حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا معاوية بن صالح نحوه إلا أنه قال سألت النبي ﷺ
