I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Were it not that I would impose hardship on my community, I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick before every prayer, and I would have delayed the night prayer until a third of the night had passed."Zayd bin Khalid used to attend the prayers in the mosque with his tooth-stick tucked behind his ear, just as a scribe places his pen behind his ear. He would not rise for prayer without using it to clean his teeth, then he would return it to its place.
[Hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in Kitab al-Tahara, Bab al-Siwak, no. 47, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq with the same wording, and Baghawi graded it sahih in Sharh al-Sunnah, 1/393, no. 198. The hadith has corroborating narrations in Ahmad, 4/116, no. 17174, and elsewhere.
