I fell seriously ill in the year of the Conquest, to the point that I was on the verge of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and only my daughter will inherit from me. Shall I bequeath all of my wealth?"He said, "No."I asked, "Then two-thirds of my wealth?"He said, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He said, "No."I asked, "Then a third?"He said, "A third, and a third is plenty. It is better for you to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the pleasure of Allah without being rewarded for it, even the morsel of food you place in your wife's mouth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions emigrate?"He replied, "You will not be left behind to do any deed seeking the face of Allah without being raised in rank and degree by it. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some peoples may benefit through you and others may be harmed. O Allah, complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Saad bin Khawla." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he had died in Mecca.
