I visited him while he had erysipelas, so we said, "Why don't you hang something on as a charm?" He replied, "Death is closer than that. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever hangs something on as a charm is left to it.'"

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Hakim also narrated it, 4/216, from the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Musa, and Ahmad, 4/310, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, with the same wording, and it is daif. The hadith has a daif corroborating narration in Nasai, 7/112, hadith 4084.There is also a report on this subject from Uqba bin Amir [Ahmad, 4/154].
